MINUTES OF PBPC MEETING JUNE 2007 Attendees: Steve Vanderlip Didrik Hoag Caryl Gay Mike Harding Bob Page Gladwyn d'Souza Paul Wendt Alexis Grant Bob Cronin Pat Giorni Mark Eliot Alejandra M. Dianne Brien Jobst Brandt Mark Brandt Richard Swent Agenda Items: 1, 2) Attendees introduced themselves and the minutes were approved. 3) Reports: (Item 9) Caltrain agenda: Bikes vs. riders, Jobst Brandt and Paul: SFBC is taking on the problem of Caltrain downgrading the access for bikes, e.g. smaller capacity on Baby Bullet cars. The bike rack design is one problem that Caltrain is not willing to solve. Another is the on-time problem: bikes take longer to load. One fix is to put both bike cars together, reducing the delay of finding the second when one is full. SFBC wants PBPC and SVBC to join the campaign. The Caltrain bike focus group was created without a goal of more bikes. More cars are to be ordered soon. The new two-door cars could help if configured better, and a proposed design is needed 4) City Watch: A new San Mateo city bike map was distributed. Bay Meadows, Steve: The BMLC plan for construction was shown; it has a 20-ft bike path and street furniture with bike racks. Belmont, Gladwyn: Belmont has a new BAC, with about four citizen members, plus staff. 5) Bike to Work Day: A successful day, with new Woodside and East Palo Alto stations, and many riders. 6) Sand Hill Rd fatality: Rich Swent reported that there were no witnesses to the car-bike collision at the top of the hill, west of I-280, where drivers cut into the shoulder at 55 mph, as the road curves to the right. He suggests a rumble strip with 0.4" bumps, and lowering the speed limit. There was a speed survey on Feb 07, suggesting a reduction to 50 mph with the bike hazard included. Some form of road calming would help. It is San Mateo Co. at that point, and a PW contact is needed, possible Gilles Tourel, Gladwyn to take on. Bob Page asks for lobbying the Grand Jury for stiffer penalties for bike collisions. Pat G. and Bob will draft a letter to the Grand Jury. Jobst Brandt quoted his friend Bud Hoffaker, who was on the scene shortly after the collision, that there were no skid marks and the car was damaged. A discussion of the Sand Hill/280 overpass eastbound bike lanes followed, with no resolution. 7) Busycle at RWC July 4th parade: We can rent a trailer and truck within the parade budget. Dianne needs dimensions. A decoration committee needs to be formed, and dates set. Mike to call Martin Kreig. 8) Review copies of County bikeways map: two copies were given to Didrik and John Langbein to review. Added Item: Alejandra reported on the new web site: She distributed a sheet on the new site layout for easier access to information. She needs input on local projects, our goals, our desired audience and the page structure. 11) The Bike Project Summary Sheet needs to be filled in by PBPC members. 12) The latest version of the position paper on the Hillsdale bike/ped bridge needs review and approval by members. Added Item: Bike parking at San Carlos Trader Joes: We need to write them a letter first. Then contact The Alliance for money available and backup on their permit requiring parking. Then go to the City Council.
