Volunteering for Bike To Work Day

Implementing Bike to Work Day cannot be done without the help and support of our volunteers, and this year the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is offering more opportunities than ever before.

Right now we’re in need of help with our Pre-Bike-to-Work-Day activities; however continue scrolling down and check out the line up for May 15, this year’s Bike to Work Day. Besides helping out at our many Energizer Stations, we’re also looking for volunteers to help out with our Bike Away from Work Bash that evening after work.

So check out the volunteer opportunities and fill out the Volunteering Form below.

Pre-Bike-to-Work-Day Activities

There are a variety of important activities leading up to Bike To Work Day. Some involve stuffing envelopes, and filling the canvas bags that we give out on Bike to Work Day. Other activities include creating fliers and materials for the event. See below for more details.

Here is a list of volunteer opportunities leading up to Bike To Work Day:

Bag Stuffers

Every year we hand out canvas, reusable bags at our Energizer Stations to people who ride their bikes on Bike to Work Day. We include a variety of items in these bags, from energy bars and fruit to information about safe riding and our Bike Away From Work Bash that evening. That’s great, except there are roughly 4,000 of them across the county to stuff. Join us as we stuff goodie bags for all the new and old riders of Bike To Work Day. This event will happen on the morning of May 11th, and we’ll post more information once we have a location secured. RSVP on the volunteering form below.

Poster Distributors

We need a team to conduct outreach to their own communities and post up fliers for Bike to Work Day in local grocery stores, coffee shops, bike shops and other places with local bulletin boards. This outreach task will take place during the last days of April and the first weeks of May.

Bike to Work Day Energizer Station Activities

Here are volunteer opportunities associated with the Energizer Stations on Bike To Work Day morning:

Energizer Station Outreach Hosts

Throughout the year, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition reaches out to the community directly by providing information tables about bicycling at various events around the area. This Bike to Work Day, we’re hoping to have an Outreach Host at every Energizer station across both San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to help bicyclists connect the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition with Bike to Work Day. We’re looking for some enthusiastic volunteers to help us spread our mission of making Silicon Valley a more bicycle friendly place to all cyclists riding that day. All Outreach Hosts are required to attend a pre-Bike-to-Work-Day Outreach Training Meeting that will take place at least two weeks before the event. If interested, please fill out the volunteering form below.

While this training session is mandatory for all Outreach Hosts working at upcoming bicycling events, all members interested in learning more about SVBC are invited to attend. Dinner and snacks will be provided, and those attending will receive a store discount. Upcoming training sessions are listed at http://svbcbikes.org/volunteer/outreach.

Videographers

We need a person to shoot footage of this event so that we can slice a video together later and use it for next year. We’re looking for film of both busy Energizer Stations as well as coverage of our press conferences in the morning and our Bike Away From Work Bash that evening after work. Please fill in the volunteering form below to request an assignment and write in your shift preference in the field reserved for comments.

Photographers

Bike Away from Work Bash Activities

Here are some Volunteer Opportunities associated with the Bike Away From Work Bash:

Set-Up

While most of the chairs and tables will be set up beforehand, we’ll need some extra hands to hang up signs and banners, set up bike parking, and help out various other activities as they come up.

Greeters

Somebody to stand outside the party, congratulate and wave people into the party.

Bike Parking Attendants

This will be a short but sweet job. We’re providing bike parking for our party goers, and we’re looking for some careful volunteers to watch the bikes. Shifts are a short 30 minutes long, so that everybody has time to enjoy the party.

Sign-In Table

These volunteers help members check in to the party. A mandatory training is required for this position, so if you’re quick, detail-oriented, and have a little bit of time to spare, you can help us out with the check process. Shifts are an hour, but you’re right there in the party.

Clean-Up

While most of the tables will be taken care of, we need some hardy volunteers to take apart the bike racks and other materials, and more importantly, help us take the racks and materials back up to our office right afterwards.
